Technical Theatre
The Sonoma State University Technical Theatre program focuses on the development of technical, stage management and design skills. A portfolio created over four years will demonstrate the student’s abilities and craftsmanship. Within an upper division Technical Block sequence of 4 semesters that functions much like a conservatory, technical theatre students learn to work collaboratively with the faculty and their peers to design, manage, and produce live events.
We aim to:
- Develop collaborative artist/entertainers
- Develop and expand the craftsmanship and technique of each student
- Expose students to all facets of the theatrical experience
- Develop each student’s written, verbal, and visual communication skills
We offer:
- A Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Theatre with a concentration in Technical Theatre, with an innovative curriculum
- Main stage and studio design opportunities in sets, lighting, costumes, and sound
- Technical opportunities in
- light and sound board computer programming and operation
- stage management
- technical direction
- stage carpentry and painting
- costume construction
- property construction
- stage electricity
- Close connection with supportive faculty
- Class size that allow for personal attention and individual feedback
- Performing Arts/Technical scholarships available through the Evert B. Person Endowment
- Professional guest artists and company residencies who stage repertoire or create original work at SSU, supported by the Person Endowment Fund
- Training in performance spaces including a state-of-the-art 475 seat proscenium theatre, 200-seat auditorium, outdoor amphitheatre, and a 50-seat black box studio
- Opportunities to collaborate with musicians, actors, singers, and dancers
- Regular involvement with ACTF (American College Theatre Festival)
- A foundation for performance or professional tracks, graduate studies, creative work, and teaching careers
