Bad Penny

That weirdo in the park may be your destiny.

In “Bad Penny”, a drifter moves from Montana to New York City where he soon gets a flat tire and goes wandering across Central Park to find a gas station. Along the way he runs into nosy strangers who offer him strange advice. When one stranger finds a “bad penny” that supposedly will bring bad luck, the advice soon dive bombs into crazy skepticism about life, the universe, and everything.

The sea takes everything.

"The Deserted Island" tells the tale of two girls stranded a strange island. When a ship lands, they are conflicted: stay far away from the injurious world of men, or embrace the possibility of desire and love. Haydn’s music is sublime, from the overture that contrasts dark and light themes, to sumptuous arias and the magnificent concluding ensemble.

"Riders to the Sea" delves into the world of a traditional Irish fishing village that lives and dies by the sea. Maurya is the mother of a family whose many sons have been claimed by the waves. Can she save her remaining son? A stirring tale made beautiful and atmospheric through the evocative melodic gifts of Vaughan Williams.

Spirits abound in "The Séance," a new play about the current generation of young adults struggling to make sense of their world. Alex, a young college student, comes to arid Fresno, California for the funeral of her sometime lover (also named Alex) and searches for a way to honor her memory. "The Séance," the first student written play to be part of the department’s main season, is a mosaic of personalities struggling against the harsh environment of a literal and spiritual drought.

The Copeland Creek Project / A Theatrical Journey

A site-specific performance along Copeland Creek as it runs through the SSU campus, just north of the University Lakes.

New works from professional guest choreographers and faculty, some taking inspiration from the "Water Works" theme. This interview-based ensemble piece, created with the Acting and Technical students of the Department of Theatre Arts & Dance, will explore the stories of communities that live and have lived along Copeland Creek -- asking how the creek has shaped the community and how the community has shaped the creek. Copeland Creek begins its course on Mount Sonoma and runs down the mountain through the Sonoma State University campus on its way to the Laguna de Santa Rosa and the sea.
