The North Coast Range is one of the most remarkable regions of California. Towering redwoods, salmon runs, elk and bear are symbols of its highly productive natural communities and rich biodiversity. Yet, as with other places on our planet, diminishing environmental resources and changes in climate have become the issues of our time. New approaches are needed if we are to achieve sustainable practices in the next century.

Tools for Transformation

SSU Field Stations & Nature Preserves is dedicated to applying the academic strengths of Sonoma State University to environmental challenges. We generate opportunities for transformational research, progressive education, and innovative land management techniques by developing our Preserves as gateways for study of North Coast environments.

The SSU Preserves are classrooms without walls and outdoor laboratories for first-hand learning and investigation. The experiences we provide at our sites for students, researchers and community members create motivation, skills, and knowledge that lead to new discoveries and understanding.

In all that we do, (lands, facilities, databases, and programs) we strive to achieve:

  • Excellence: by collaborating with organizations in the region on high-priority issues, applying the best available science-based information (including how people learn), creating motivational experiences, and enhancing critical learning and communication skills.
