Weather and Climate

Real-Time Weather

Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin animates satellite images of precipitable water in real-time. These animations show atmospheric rivers, vast ribbons of air in the sky that often carry as much water vapor as 10 times the equivalent discharge of liquid water by the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico. Atmospheric rivers were "discovered" in the last decade when scientific advances in radar, unmanned aircraft, satellites, and other technologies created new opportunities for observing and tracking atmospheric water. Much of the work has taken place right in Sonoma County. , are transforming our understanding of storms and flooding on the West Coasts of the US, Canada, Europe and South America.
