Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to make an appointment?
As long as there is a tutor available, we will accept drop-ins.  However, we strongly encourage you to make an appointment a few days in advance. The W.C. is a pretty popular place, especially towards the end of the semester, and we hate to see people left out.

Do you have any Philosophy majors that work here?
Yes.  And AMCS majors, and Psychology majors, and Art Studio majors, and of course some English majors.  Because the goal of the Writing Center is to provide help for ALL writers, we try to have tutors that specialize in a variety of disciplines.  But even if you can’t get an appointment with our local Nietzsche buff, all of the tutors here are equally qualified to help you out.

What's the deal with this WEPT thing?
The WEPT is Sonoma State's answer to the GWAR--the statewide Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement. It's a simple, timed essay, which all students must pass to get their diploma from SSU. The only way to get out of it is if you’ve been published.  And no, zaum doesn’t count.  For more information, check out our WEPT link.

Will you proofread my paper?
Sorry, we don't proofread papers or edit papers. What we will do for you is go over a paper with you, help you learn how to proofread you own paper, give you tips about self-editing, and answer any other questions you may have about the writing process or any aspect of writing.

Is Scott Miller around?
If he's not teaching class or running a staff meeting, Scott Miller, fresh from his sabbatical, can be found here in the Writing Center.
