Internship Description

Job Title: Developmental Disabilities Activity Teacher Aide

Compensation: unpaid
Amount/Type: one hour of supervision per week; mentorship-experienced educators; team meetings; under supervision of a teacher lead class/activity independently; work with an endearing population with complex psychological and medical profiles.
Internship Length: 1 year
Hours Per Week: 1-5

Population: Adults
Focus: Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health
Setting: Community Agency

Duties: Lead classes and activities that include, but are not limited to: communication class, sign language, relationship group, conflict resolution, problem solving and stress management skills training, and expressive art. Toward the end of the internship lead a class independently with Program Director observation.

Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent; BA/BS in progress

Additional Information: There are many opportunities both formal and informal for an intern to assist clients in improving social skills, interpersonal relationships, and modes of communication during the work day. As an intern gains skill, expertise, and familiarity with the clientele and methods of effectively intervening he/she may take on more leadership within the classes. The teacher may observe and provide the intern with feedback. There is reading material available onsite, as well as information through discussion about the nuances of this population. Additionally, our program has a family group that meets once per month that might be appealing to an intern to co-lead. As a side note, 17 out of 68 consumers are dual diagnosed with a major mental illness.
