The Student Health Center has about 30 doses of Influenza vaccine remaining, and is continuing to provide flu shots to SSU students and staff while these supplies last. ($5 students, $15 faculty and staff)
Medical Director Georgia Schwartz says that today's Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report of influenza activity in the U.S. describes an increase in frequency of confirmed influenza cases, with widespread activity in 44 states, California included. This upturn in influenza activity follows a relatively quiet period during the early months of the flu season. According to the CDC, the most common influenza viruses circulating in the region are an Influenza A H1N1 subtype antigenically covered by the 07-08 vaccine.
"As the incidence of influenza increases in our area, it is important for those who have not yet had a true influenza-like illness to get a flu shot as soon as possible, if they wish to reduce their risk of becoming ill with influenza or spreading it to others," she says. "True influenza is a respiratory illness with fever, chills, aches, cough and protracted fatigue."
