Faculty, Staff, Students, and Administration Join Forces
to Prevent a $386 Million Cut to the CSU Budget
The CSU community, a community that has been divided on many issues in recent history, has joined together for the most important fight it has ever faced: protecting the future of California.
The Governor proposes to cut $386 million from the CSU budget for the 2008/09 academic year at a time when the economy is lagging, businesses are desperate for skilled workers, the State’s infrastructure needs massive improvements, and disadvantaged and middle-class students are finding it harder and harder to afford a college education.
SSU will hold a Campus Budget "Fight Back" meeting from noon-1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 20 in Evert B Person Theatre as part of a CSU sytemwide series of forums to organize to win the necessary funding.
The entire campus community is urged to attend. Details will follow in next week's NewsBytes.
Cynthia Desrochers Explores Creating
a
Civil Classroom,
March 14
Cynthia Desrochers, Director of the CSU Institute for Teaching and Learning, explores the erosion of classroom decorum in a workshop called "Toward a Civil Classroom: Bridging Expectations" on March 14 from nooon-2 p.m. in Schulz 1121.
What constitutes uncivil behavior? Why do incivilities occur? How might we define expectations of both instructors and students at the outset? Comments and questions like these have been seen increasingly in higher education publications over the last decade.
A shared concern among colleges nationwide, Desrochers says it is important to discuss expectations for classrooms together because faculty and students are partners in the creation of classroom climate. Faculty are invited to share, listen, discuss, and better understand both sides of this story. Register online.
