Applications Available for Fulbright-Hayes
Study Tour
to Phillipines
The North Bay International Studies Project at SSU has received a Fulbright
Hays Study Tour of the Southern Philippines for K-12 teachers from the
North Bay. Applications are now available and will close on March 31.
The goal of North Bay International Studies Project (NBISP), through this Fulbright Hays Study Abroad Program, is to develop a cohort of K-12 teachers who can integrate Philippine and Filipino American content in the California curriculum for language arts and social sciences.
It is important for all teachers to have adequate multicultural knowledge and experience via cultural and language immersion, says Professor Leny Strobel.
"This Fulbright award focuses on enabling teachers to develop curriculum materials; the cultural immersion experience will them internalize the value of cross-cultural encounters with Filipinos, which, hopefully, then translates into the effective classroom pedagogy," says Strobel.
The Fulbright Hays grant has been awarded to this project for the second time as a result of the excellent program that has been developed by its project directors, Strobel (American Multicultural Studies Dept), Miriam Hutchins (NBISP Director) and their counterparts in the Philippines -- in-country host, Father Albert Alejo of Ateneo De Davao University and his team of experts.
Contact NBISP for further information and to request an application by calling 4-2409, or e-mailing Miriam Hutchins, miriam.hutchins@sonoma.edu. Mail applications to North Bay International Studies Project, Sonoma State University, 1801 E. Cotati Ave., Rohnert Park, CA 94928, or fax to 664-2053.
