Leading Climate Scientist to Speak at SSU
One of the world's leading climate scientists, Professor Inez Fung of UC Berkeley, speaks at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 7 in Darwin 103. Her free lecture, "The Warming Will Accelerate the Warming," is part of the "What Physicists Do" series.
Fung, co-director of the Berkeley Institute of the Environment, is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, recipient of the prestigious Roger Revelle Medal of the American Geophysical Union, and listed among the "Scientific American 50" for 2005. She also received the World Technology Network Award for the Environment in 2006.
Fung has been making sophisticated models of the earth's atmosphere for more than twenty years, computing the variations in carbon dioxide and dust and how they interact with the climate. Her research contributed to the work of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change, which shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Psychology Professor Explains "How Toys Teach Racism"
Geri Olson, Psychology, discusses "How Toys Teach Racism" from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, in Stevenson 2011 as the first Brown Bag interdisciplinary seminar offered by the School of Social Sciences. Olson's talk focuses on a recent exhibit on the History of Black Dolls and the issues of race and class that can be explored by looking closely at toys that are created for children. From minstrel dolls, Black Sambo and golliwoggs, to contemporary examples of Barbie and G.I. Joe, the conversation explores the impact of imagery produced by the toy industry.
Romeo & Juliet, West Side Story Repertory Presented
The next Arts & Humanities Research and Creative Works Forum begins at 12:05 p.m. on Thursday, April 3 in Schulz 1121. Lynne Morrow (Music) and Paul Draper (Theatre Arts) give a presentation entitled "Romeo & Juliet and West Side Story Repertory at SSU." They will discuss their rehearsals and soon-to-open productions that play from April 10-May 11 in the Evert B. Person Theatre. A scene from each of the shows will be presented.
"When Silence Explodes" Commemorates

Tech Tragedy, April 16
The campus community is invited to commemorate the first anniversary of the Virginia Tech tragedy on Wednesday, April 16 in Schulz 3001 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at a forum called "When Silence Explodes." The purpose of the forum, co-sponsored by the English Department and the Hutchins Dialogue Center, is to "gain a deeper understanding of the causes and early warning signs of school violence and, above all, to gain strategies for preventing it," says English Professor Noelle Oxendhandler. The centerpiece of the event will be a panel featuring Ben Frymer, Professor of Sociology at Hutchins, who specializes in the study of school violence and has written a book about Columbine. Also appearing with him will be Lisa Wyatt, Director of Counseling and Psychological Services; Sonia Beck, a Santa Rosa psychologist who has spent decades working with juvenile delinquents; Ada Jaarmsa of the Philosophy Department and others. "Rebuilding New Orleans" on Spring Break
To honor the SSU students participating in JUMP's Alternative Spring Break in New Orleans, the University Library has created a display called "Rebuilding New Orleans." The display includes photos of some of the 32 students who went to New Orleans last April, as well as materials available in the library to help the students make sense of their experience. Another 40 SSU students are presently building houses in St. Bernard's Parish during this year's Spring Break. The Library's display is in the cases opposite the Multimedia Center on the second floor.
