Alliance for CSU

Members of the Alliance for the CSU staffed tables in the Stevenson Quad on Monday to help the campus community tell the Govenor that cuts to the CSU budget would be devastating to the state.

More than 800 Faxes Sent to Governor as Alliance for the CSU Holds "23 Campuses, 23 Days" Event on Campus

The Alliance for the CSU, an organization made up of the entire California State University community, including students, staff, faculty and administration, has put together a program called "23 Campuses, 23 Days," to notify Governor Schwarzenegger by fax and phone calls that cutting the CSU budget as he proposed in his January budget proposal would be devastating to the state.  Each campus will hold an event as part of the campaign.  Sonoma State University kicked off the campaign on Monday, April 14 and members set up tables in the Stevenson quad from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Alliance for CSUAbout forty volunteers from all segments of the campus, including ASI President Whitney Diver, CSUEU Vice President Leanne Bowes, Vice President for Administration and Finance Larry Furukawa-Schlereth and CFA President Andy Merrifield, each "tabled" for an hour or more.

The Alliance sent more than 800 faxes to the governor on that day. Hundreds of students joined with staff, faculty and administrators to send a simple yet important message to the governor, "We support the CSU and so should you.  Restore the CSU budget in your revised May budget."  In addition several hundred people who had not yet joined the Alliance signed up.  Joining the Alliance means that members will be available to contact the legislature and the governor again if needed when the finalized budget is being debated.

The "23 Campuses, 23 Days" campaign will continue at Sonoma until the May Revise budget is announced. Those who did not get a chance to fax the governor, can contact cfa@sonoma.edu to get faxing information. Those who want to join that Alliance can do so by visiting the Alliance website at www.allianceforthecsu.org.  All the participants in the tabling thought the event was a great success and continue to understand that the proposed cuts are not inevitable.
