Free Bike Registration, Lock Giveaway and Maintenance on Bike to Work Day

bike to workWhy not leave the car at home on an upcoming sunny day and walk or bike to work? On Thursday, May 15, SSU is supporting 511.org's annual Bike to Work Day. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to commute to campus using means other than their cars to promote alternative forms of transportation that benefit the entire community.

On Bike to Work Day, Energizer Stations will be located throughout the county to hydrate and encourage those participating on their way to SSU. At the final stop, SSU will host a station at the south entrance to campus (near the flagpole near East Cotati Avenue) with free gifts, food and refreshments and a chance at great raffle prizes!

Police & Parking Services is registering bicycles free during the Bike to Work Day activities. The first 15 riders to register their bicycles will also receive a free U-lock. In addition, bicycle maintenance and repair will be available at this location for SSU students, faculty or staff.

For those who do not own a bike, there are other options available. Visit the Sonoma County Transit web page for information on bus schedules and stop locations.

Join the YouTube Working Group

A working group is being formed to support current efforts to produce the SSU educational channel on YouTube for SSU. The site is already up and is being beta-tested with videos produced mainly for streaming.sonoma.edu. Response to videos now available on the SSU YouTube test site, without any real promotion, has been astounding, says SSU's Director of Instructional Technology Services Bruce Carpe. "It is a clear indication just how powerful this new direction is going to be for us," he says. The SSU YouTube site is located at http://youtube.com/CSUSonoma.

There are many decisions to be made on how the site will be operated. Carpe says the main goal is to integrate all current YouTube SSU users under one umbrella channel. A broad representation from the campus community is sought among students, faculty and staff to form procedures and approaches for the months ahead as more content is uploaded to the SSU channel.

SSU is following UC Berkeley in this effort, which launched the first university channel of its kind last fall. Those interested should contact Carpe at bruce.carpe@sonoma.edu.
