Monday, August 20 - FIRST DAY
The New Student Convocation is a festive welcome to the new class by the faculty of Sonoma State. It features an academic procession (if you've never seen one, you should) of faculty in their traditional ceremonial garb and a welcome to the new students by one of Sonoma's recipients of the Rowland Award for Excellence in Teaching.
You know her from Real World Hawaii and 3 MTV Infernos. Join us for an evening with Ruthie as she talks about life on the show, after the show and what she's up to now. Bring your questions and your cameras.

River Huston is a writer, poet, painter, activist and performance educator and has been featured on Good Morning America, NBC, Nightline and CNN. In this hilarious, interactive and provocative performance, River will present realistic options when it comes to sex, alcohol and communication. Huston earned her BA in Music and Health Education and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Albright College. In her lifetime Huston has been a musician, fitness trainer, audio engineer, bike messenger, marijuana farmer, reporter, taxi driver, booking agent and waitress. Women interested in joining a national sorority should attend this information night hosted by the SSU Panhellenic Council. Attendees will be presented with information about the national sororities at SSU (Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Xi Delta and Gamma Phi Beta) and have an opportunity to meet a few of the women involved in these organizations. Information about the recruitment process will also be provided and those in attendance will have an opportunity to ask questions about recruitment and membership and have them answered by active sorority members. No obligations are made by attending this info. night.
What's It All About? is a series of short theatrical scenes taken directly from campus life that show behavior related to substance use and sexual communication. Sometimes funny, sometimes dramatic, always entertaining, these scenes will grab you both emotionally and intellectually, making you want to talk about what you have seen. Following each scene there is a moderated discussion or "talk-back" between the actors and the audience.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) explores the strange new world of digital technologies with a talk demonstrating how the legal and technological landscape is changing for better and for worse. This is an emerging topic: colleges and universities have received thousands more legal notices about file sharing this academic year alone. The EFF lecture will explore this zone from every angle: from what's legal and what's not, to the rights we are in danger of losing, and steps you can take to protect them.
