National Suicide Prevention Week Offers Campus Resources
National Suicide Prevention week runs from Sept. 9-17. Mental health and suicide prevention are student and campus issues that warrant collaborative attention from all and for more than just this particular week- so here are a few on-line resources for the campus community supplied by Georgia Schwartz of the Student Health Center.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youths and young adults in the United States. Risk factors include 1) a previous suicide attempt, 2) history of depression or other mental illness, 3) alcohol or drug abuse, 4) family history of suicide or violence, 5) physical illness, and 6) feeling alone - many students are experiencing one or more of these risks, often while trying to hide this from others.
The US Centers for Disease Control maintains a suicide prevention website at http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/dvp/suicide/default.htm and the Jed Foundation maintains a website called Ulifeline - http://www.ulifeline.org/main/Home.html that focuses on college student mental health and well being including suicide prevention--which will even carry campus specific resource to students. It has been partially constructed for SSU but is not yet complete.
Changes in Student Assistant Employment Process
In an effort to improve the process, there are changes to the Student Employment Form, wage structure, and Authorization and Checklist form. For the new SEFand the complete Student Assistant Employment Guidelines, visit www.sonoma.edu/hs/saa.
Student Sign-ups
The new Student Assistant sign-up schedule and instructions are now available online at www.sonoma.edu/hs/saa.
Sign-up orientation is required, prior to beginning work, for new Student Assistants or returning Student Assistants who have not worked at SSU within the past three years. All others require only a SEF to be submitted to Employee Services. (All summer student positions end 8/30/07. For those students who will continue to work submit a new SEF using 8/31/07 as the start date.)
Please have new Student Assistants go to www.sonoma.edu/hs/saa/signup.shtml for complete sign-up information. At this site students will find the scheduled sessions, sign-up documents and information regarding the acceptable identification. They must bring the completed documents and appropriate ID to one of the scheduled sessions no later than the start of their first day of work.
All sessions are located on the second floor of Salazar Hall in Administration and Finance. Direct questions or concerns to Emily Bawanan or Terrie DeLorm.
