Center for Community Engagement
Hosts First Open House, Oct. 26

The Center for Community Engagement hosts its first Open House on Friday, Oct. 26 from 2-4 p.m. on the first floor of the library next to the Writing Center in Schulz 1102. "Everyone is welcome to see the new space and provide input into the future of the CCE," says director Merith Weisman who encourages attendees to bring a community partner or a student. Coffee and cookies will be served.

The CCE advances community-based programs on the Sonoma State University campus. The Center supports faculty in developing community-based teaching that integrates academic theory with community service and research that is inclusive of community partners and students to address local problems.

"By incorporating these projects into the curriculum, we teach students to be active citizens and that the theories taught in the classroom do apply to real-world issues" Weisman says.

The CCE works to establish and strengthen partnerships in the community and with faculty members to help them integrate learning pedagogies for the common good into their curricula. This includes service-learning, community-based participatory and action research, public service, problem-based learning for the common good and activism.

Additionally, they help non-profit organizations and faculty and staff to connect with leadership positions such as Boards of Directors and committees and students to connect with careers for the common good.
