Plagiarism Prevention Service
Expands for Faculty, Students

Faculty and students can now use turnitin.com's plagiarism prevention service via a new site license. Turnitin is a web-based tool that allows instructors to evaluate student writing for possible plagiarism. Instructors create Turnitin Assignments, then students upload and submit their papers to the website.

Once submitted, Turnitin automatically compares the paper to billions of pages on the Internet, commercial databases of journals and periodicals, and other papers already submitted to Turnitin. Turnitin generates an "originality report" which details any matches found, and the source of the matched content. Instructors can make these reports available to students. There are two ways to access Turnitin.com's service.

Instructors using WebCT can add a Turnitin Assignment directly from the WebCT course homepage. Turnitin will recognize the course, instructor and students without requiring additional login, profile creation or class enrollment. Students can turn in assignments via WebCT's Turnitin Assignment tool. A column is automatically created in the WebCT Grade Book for each Turnitin Assignment.

Instructors who don't wish to use Turnitin with WebCT can request the Join Account information (Seawolf ID required), then go to Turnitin.com to create a login and profile on Turnitin.com and join SSU's account. This method also requires the instructor to create a class and either set up student accounts or allow students to join the class.
