"Damn Yankees" for Free is a Devilish Bargain

The Oct. 26 performance at 7:30 p.m. of Damn Yankees by students of the Center for Performing Arts is free to SSU faculty and staff with a $5 ticket charge for guests. Other performances are priced at $12 for the campus community. Under the skillful stage direction of former Sonoma State University dance professor Ann Woodhead, and the musical direction of Robert Young, the Evert B. Person stage will be transformed into a ball diamond, complete with grandstands, dugouts, signage and lights. There are nine performances. For tickets, contact the Center For Performing Arts Box Office at 4-2353. The box office is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m.

ALMA MATER: INVENTION OR NECESSITY? - Professor Carla Steinberg discusses "Alma Mater: Invention or Necessity" at noon Thursday, Oct. 26, in Schulz 3001. The event is a presentation for the Arts and Humanities Forum and addresses the need for curriculum and courses that "develop in substance and form new strategies to address the challenges of the 21st century." She says "I recommend students not only receive a transmitted body of knowledge, but become themselves makers of knowledge and examine the wisdom traditions, the visionary philosophers and thinkers artists, poets, physicists, and ecologists novelists. Everyone must endeavor to transform our vision of culture from the adolescent solipsism of winner take all to a more enlightened view of a shared democracy whereby everyone participates and has a fair opportunity to prosper."

KNOWING MATHEMATICS AND TEACHING MATHEMATICS - Rick Marks, Professor of Mathematics, describes the pedagogical content knowledge that has ties to epistemology, learning theory, educational policies and standards, research, and teacher preparation.
