Psychologist on benefits of
undergraduate diversity, Oct.
30
Heather Smith, Psychology, discusses "College friendship network diversity, current closeness, and graduates’ political attitudes" at next Tuesday’s School of Social Sciences Brown Bag, Oct. 30, noon to 1 p.m., in Stevenson 2011. Research shows the educational benefits of diverse undergraduate populations appear obvious, says Smith. However, most psychological research focuses on students’ experiences and attitudes while they are university students. Smith has investigated whether university students’ educational experiences and college friendships predict their attitudes five years after graduation.
Respondents who reported a more diverse set of close college friends reported more support for multiculturalism and community engagement, she reports. "Respondents’ recall of how frequently faculty discussed ethnic and cultural diversity predicted their current multicultural competence and community engagement. These relationships remain reliable even after including the respondents’ ethnic background, age, gender, political orientation and the educational attainment of the respondents’ parents in the regression equations."
