Chinese actors

THEATRE ARTS Chair Paul Draper brings images of actor training from many countries to the Arts and Humanities Forum on Nov. 29 at noon in Schulz 1121. Entitled "Actor Training: Comparing China, India and the U.S.," Draper will share what he learned about developing young theatre artists through interviews with a Kathakali Master and a Rajasthani Bhopa; visiting rehearsals at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing; and working in a pre-professional acting program in Minnesota. He witnessed 50 performances in India and China during this sabbatical. Above is a production of "Farewell My Concubine."


Karin Enstam Jaffe on Evolution of
Uniquely Human Characteristics, Nov. 20

Karin Enstam Jaffe, Anthropology, discusses her recent  on "Darwin's Legacy: Scenarios in Human Evolution" at the School of Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Brown Bag program on Nov. 20, noon to 1 p.m., in Stevenson 2011. This presentation is based on a recently submitted manuscriptregarding the history of ideas about the evolution of uniquely human characteristics.

It was inspired by Darwin's book The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex. This manuscript emphasizes the roles ofnatural and sexual selection in human evolution, revealing the remarkable prescience of Darwin's scenarios. In addition to bipedalism, life history, and facial and bodily displays, it treats the evolution of language and culture.
