Annual Holiday Pops Concerts with Christmas Classics and Sizzling Sounds
The Sonoma State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Brian S. Wilson, performs seasonal Holiday Pops Concerts on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m., and again on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. in Ives Concert Hall (Ives 119).
Now in its sixth year, a special feature of this year's event is the introduction of the "Three Trumpets." Doug Morton, Dave Scott and Daniel Gianola-Norris provide the big trumpet sound on a number of pieces after intermission.
Another feature of this seasonal event is Alfred Reed's Russian Christmas Music. An ancient Russian Christmas Carol ("Carol of the Little Russian Children"), together with a good deal of original material and some motivic elements from the liturgical music of the Eastern Orthodox Church, forms the basis for this musical impression of Old Russia during the jubilant Christmas season. All of the resources of the modern, integrated symphonic band are drawn upon to create an almost overwhelming sound picture of tone, color, power, and sonority.
Other pieces of note on the program include James Swearingen's "Night Before Christmas," " Reed's "Greensleeves," "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson and Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas."
Another highlight of these concerts is the conducting opportunity for senior music education majors to take a turn on the podium to conduct a piece. Cozy table seating, festive lighting, holiday cheer and refreshments and the spirit of the season will make this a memorable holiday event.
This concert officially kicks off preparation for the Symphonic Wind Ensemble's
Italy tour in the spring. Through connections with first trombone player
Carlo Piermatire, the Wind Ensemble will travel to Monte Urano to play four
concerts. Piermatire is from Monte Urano.
