Say Goodbye to Les Adler at Dec. 3 Reception
A
retirement celebration for retiring School of Extended
Education Dean Les Adler has been set for 3-5 p.m. on Monday,
December 3 in the Art Gallery. Adler joined the faculty
of the Hutchins School of Liberal Studies in 1970 after
receiving his B.A. degree from the University of New Mexico
(1963) and his M.A. (1965) and Ph.D. degrees (1970) in
history from the University of California at Berkeley.
During his 30 years of teaching in the interdisciplinary Hutchins program, Adler also served as a resident faculty member in the American Institute for Foreign Study's London Semester program in 1983 and as a Fulbright Scholar at the National University of Singapore during the 1991-1992 academic year.
Author of The Red Image: American Attitudes Toward Communism in the Cold War Era, (1991), as well as articles dealing with the effects of anti-communism on American life and culture, he has published essays on current events in several national newspapers and on National Public Radio, and has regularly reviewed books on Eastern Europe, Russia and the U. S. for the San Francisco Chronicle.
In addition to his teaching, research and writing, Adler also served as Provost of the Hutchins School, Director of the Hutchins Center for Interdisciplinary Learning and director of several California State University grant programs. He was appointed Dean of the School of Extended Education in 2000. As Dean he started the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at SSU and was instrumental in spreading it to 116 programs in 48 states.
Lost and Found Auction, Dec. 6
The annual Lost and Found Auction will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 6 in the Cooperage. Cash purchases only are allowed. All proceeds benefit the campus scholarship fund. Items for sale this year include bicycles, cell phones, clothes, books, sunglasses, umbrellas, calculators, memory sticks, electronics, small appliances...and more. Questions regarding the auction should be directed to coordinator Tracey Goodman at 4-4248. No items will be held, so come prepared to take purchases when leaving auction.
Search Begins for Commencement Speaker 2008
The Associated Students is excited to once again be able to bring the Commencement speaker to campus for 2008. Students (graduating or not) are being asked for suggestions for a speaker for the May 2008 ceremonies. Send suggestions or comments to Bruce Berkowitz at bruce.berkowitz@sonoma.edu by December 5.
"While the Associated Students does not have unlimited resources and there are many practical issues to address before a speaker may be chosen, we are committed to providing the best Commencement speaker we possibly can," says Associated Students President Whitney Diver.
A&F Hosts Toys for Tots
This holiday season Administration and Finance is partnering with Toys for Tots as the organization celebrates its 60th anniversary. With over 13 million children living in poverty, Toys for Tots needs help from the campus community. Bring a new, unwrapped gift and drop in the bins located in the lobby of Administration and Finance on the second floor of Salazar Hall.
