FACULTY HONORS
Dr. Barbara Bloom Receives
National Criminal Justice
Award
Her work in the field of criminology and research that promoted programs that are fair, human, effective, and economically sound earned Dr. Barbara Bloom the National Council on Crime and Delinquency's 2007 Donald Cressey Award.
Bloom is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies. She also serves on the Governor's Rehabilitation Strike Team, working with the governor to address the state's crisis in prison overpopulation.
At an awards ceremony in October, family, friends, colleagues, policy makers and practitioners gathered at the Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel in San Francisco to honor Bloom.
NCCD President Dr. Barry Krisberg presented the award, stating that Bloom's "consistent, excellent, and tireless work to draw attention to the issues of prisoners, especially women, has had a significant impact on the field and makes the work easier for those of us also working to improve out society. Her work on gender-responsive strategies for women will no doubt be the foundation for all future work in this area."
Lorna Catford Honored by Mental Illness Alliance
The Sonoma County Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness sponsors a "Heroes in the Fight" awards program for which Psychology Lecturer Dr. Lorna Catford was nominated this past year for her dedication to counseling and mentoring the care givers who have children and family members with neurological disorders, autism and cerebral palsy as part of the YMCA Enabling Aquatics program and as part of her SSU psychology classes.
Katy Ha, Kinesiology, who nominated her, said " Mental health victories, large and small, happen everyday in Sonoma County thanks to the efforts of many individuals, like Dr. Catford. Our kudos go to Dr. Catford for her recognition, her caregiving dedication and caregiver support in this very important endeavor. "
The NAMI "In The Fight" award is used to acknowledge those mental health workers who best exemplify ongoing care and dedication in this field and to celebrate the heroic work of the many people who fight for better mental health, better lives for those individuals with mental illness, and support provided to their caregivers. Persons who best exemplify ongoing care and dedication in this field are nominated by their peers within the local Sonoma County mental health community.
