Veiled woman on street"Behind the Veil" Looks at Western Attitudes toward Arab-Muslim Women

"Behind the Veil: French Desire and the Middle East"is the subject of a slide lecture to be given by Dr. Sahar Amer at 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, in the Commons.

Amer is associate professor of Asian and International Studies at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

The French, and Western cultures in general, have long been fascinated by the Orient, the Arab-Muslim world, and, in particular, the image of the veiled woman.

Using literature, paintings, photos and film, Amer frames Western countries' contemporary concerns about women wearing the veil within the politics of colonization and the erotic desire to lift the veil from both the culture of the Orient and Arab-Muslim women.

The event is sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, the Women's Resource Center, the Schools of Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities, the Intercultural Center, Hutchins School of Liberal Studies, and Project Censored. The lecture, in English, is free and open to the public. For further information, contact Suzanne Toczyski, Modern Languages and Literatures, 4-2351.

New Online Experts Guide Has Search Engine, Photos

The SSU Experts Guide has been updated and can be found online at www.sonoma.edu/pubs/experts. The directory includes many new entries from recently-hired faculty and includes new categories such as current research and community work.

For the first time, the guide has its own search engine and entries can be searched by keyword or name. Faculty photographs have been added.

Faculty and staff who submitted revisions for the guide earlier in the year should check their listings by doing a keyword search on their name at www.sonoma.edu/pubs/experts. Send changes or additions to Jean Wasp, Media Relations Coordinator, 4-2057.

The guide continues to be an important resource for local media looking for expert commentary as well as community groups looking for speakers.

Olson, Wandling Named Service-Learning Faculty Fellows

Geri Olson, Psychology, and Tim Wandling, English, will serve as Service-Learning Faculty Fellows this academic year with the Office of Community-Based Learning.

The positions were created through a Learn and Serve grant from the CSU Chancellor's Office, awarded to assess and strengthen SSU's civic mission of education.

In this role, Olson will create a resource to help faculty present and receive recognition for service-learning work during RTP review. The developed resources will also guide RTP committees in assessing service-learning work.

Wandling's work as Faculty Fellow involves identifying a spectrum of courses that weave a service-learning thread throughout the curriculum and create a model for a civic leadership minor. Contact Amra Stafford, 4-3202, with
questions about this initiative.

Workplace Violence Prevention Training Online

SSU Police Chief Nate Johnson reports a new online Workplace Violence Prevention Training program through "Workplace Answers " is now available.

The training takes about 40 minutes to complete. It is designed to answer many of the common questions associated with workplace violence issues, including ways to avoid them and to how best deal with inappropriate behavior that might lead to violence in the workplace.

Johnson says the course contains useful information that is best learned as a preventive measure rather than after the problem occurs.

To register, contact Lt. George Ellington at george.ellington@sonoma.edu or 4-2242.
