Graduates Come From Many States to
Nursing Department's 30th Annniversary
The SSU Department of Nursing recently hosted a Jubilee to commemorate its 30th anniversary and graduates attended from as far away as Arizona, Texas, and Washington to help celebrate the event. Many graduates have made major contributions to the profession of nursing in practice, research and education at home and abroad, says department chair Liz Close. The Department of Nursing's first "Second Step" (RN-BSN) graduates were awarded degrees in 1974 and since that time, more than 1,800 students have graduated with baccalaureate and master's degrees in nursing.
That evening, the "Outstanding Alumni Contribution to SSU Nursing" award was given to Dr. Wendy Smith for her 18 years of extraordinary service to the SSU Nursing Department. Dr. Smith received her BSN and MSN-Family Nurse Practitioner from SSU. As the Director of the MSN-FNP program she has been awarded federal and state grant funds totaling more than $2.3 million for the unique and internationally recognized distance education graduate level Family Nurse Practitioner program that is one of the hallmarks of the department.
The retirements of nursing professors Sandra DeBella Bodley, Thomas Nolan, and Gregory Crow were also highlighted at the celebration.
Retiring after many years of service to the SSU Nursing Department are (left to right) professors Thomas Nolan, Sandra DeBella Bodley and Gregory Crow. They were honored at the department's recent 30th anniversary.
