Theresa Alfaro-Velcamp, History, was invited to speak at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Fall 2004 Speakers Series entitled "Dialogue and Security in Today's Latin America." As one of two presentators on Nov. 5, Alfaro-Velcamp presented, "Serving Allah in Modern Mexico: Middle Eastern Immigrant Positioning," speaking about the Muslim community in Mexico and Latin America.

Glenn S. Brassington, Elisa Velasquez, Psychology, and eight of their students presented a three-paper symposium on ethnicity and health and a single paper on ethnic difference in adult close relationships at the National Latino Psychological Association meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona (Nov. 18-20). The papers report the results of research conducted on 525 undergraduate students from four ethnic groups (i.e., Caucasian, Latino, Asian, and Pacific Islander) and deal with health related issues such as ways of coping with stress, obesity, and sleep. The students presenting at this meeting are planning to apply to master's and doctoral programs in psychology, social work, and medicine. This achievement will greatly support their applications.

Matt James, Geology, gave an invited lecture to the Department of Biology at Pacific Union College in Angwin in the Napa Valley on October 26 titled, "Collecting Evolution: The 1905-06 Galapagos Expedition of the California Academy of Sciences."

Terry Wright, Geology, has been awarded membership in the "Russian River Valley Pioneers," a group recognized for ground-breaking work in agriculture founded by Michael DeLoach of Deloach winery. Wright was honored along with other local wine notables such as Gaye LeBaron, Joe Rochioli and Louis Foppiano, Sr. and Louis Foppiano, Jr. This is for his work in soils and wine quality and publications on the unique qualities of Russian River soils.
