Applause Award

Applause Award

Kris Montgomery,
Women's Resource Center Coordinator

I want to recognize the excellent work performed by Kris Montgomery during the entire calendar year of 2004 when she assumed the role of Interim Coordinator of Student Discipline. Kris was extremely professional and conscientious as she handled many challenging student discipline cases with skill and grace despite her lack of formal training in judicial affairs.

She improved the student discipline protocols and record keeping systems while developing strong working relationships with various campus departments. Kris also recommended significant improvements to the Cheating and Plagiarism Policy and initiated an SSU Philosophy Statement Regarding Alcohol and Drugs.

In summary, the University is indebted to Kris Montgomery for her extraordinary efforts "beyond the call of duty", and I know that she is pleased to return to her ongoing assignments in the Women's Resource Center and Office of Campus Life.

Vice President for Student Affairs

"Aiming High for a New GE at Sonoma State" is Focus of GE Fair, Feb. 15-17

The General Education Subcommittee is putting together a "GE Fair" for the week of February 15-17 in Schulz 3001 to collect ideas for possible revisions to the way GE is delivered to SSU students.

The fair will be held on:

* Tuesday, Feb. 15, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
* Wednesday, Feb. 16, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
* Thursday, Feb. 17, 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Coffee, tea and snacks will be available. Many prizes will be offered for attendees including a grand prize of a notebook computer.

At the GE Fair faculty, staff, administrators, and students will have the opportunity to view excellent materials on a variety of GE and First Year initiatives from around the country, view a PowerPoint on a "First Year Experience" pilot program proposal at SSU which is now moving to the Academic Senate, ask questions, and contribute their views about GE reform.

The GE Subcommittee invites chairs of departmental faculties to schedule a weekly or special faculty meeting at the GE Fair. Someone from the subcommittee will present the pilot FYE proposal, discuss where GE reform is headed, and hear ideas and concerns faculty have about GE reform. To schedule an hour at the fair, contact David Hartranft, 4-2237, or david.hartranft@sonoma.edu

A complete schedule for the day can be found at GE Fair.

Faculty Can Notify Eligible Students for
the California Pre-Doctoral Program

Faculty members are encouraged to notify eligible students of the California Pre-Doctoral Program for the 2005-2006 academic year. The program is designed to increase the diversity of the pool of potential university faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of current upper division or graduate students in the CSU who are economically or educationally disadvantaged. Special emphasis will be placed on increasing the number of CSU students who enter graduate programs at one of the UC institutions.

Selected scholars work closely with a CSU faculty sponsor to develop a plan that leads ultimately to enrollment in a doctoral program. Pre-Doctoral awards, in the amount of $3,000, may be used for travel to doctorate-granting institutions and national symposia or professional meetings, for application and test fees, journal subscriptions, and membership in professional organizations. Up to $1,000 of the award may be used by the faculty sponsor for joint travel.

Selections are made at the Chancellor’s Office and are based upon information given in the application. Application packets are available in the Graduate Studies office, Stevenson 1041. Completed applications must be received by 4:30 pm on Friday, March 25. For further information contact David Hartranft or Elaine Sundberg at 4-2237.
