Jorge Porras, Modern Languages and Literatures, participated in two professional meetings this January. He read a paper and chaired a session at the Linguistic Society of America/Society for Pidgin and Creole Annual Meeting in San Francisco. His paper titled, "Discourse markers and oral narrative in Afro-Iberian Creoles: A semantic, pragmatic, and textual analysis" dealt with research on three Spanish and Portuguese-based Creole languages: Cape Verdean, Palenqueroand Papiamentu. Porras also represented the SSU Foreign Language component at the Northern California Region meeting of the Intersegmental Major Preparation Articulated Curriculum in Milbrae. This project involves interdisciplinary faculty from UC, CSU and California Community College systems for the articulation of intersegmental course descriptors.

Elizabeth C. Martínez, Chicano and Latino Studies/Modern Languages and Literature, volunteered her voice to the Sonoma County Public Library system. Hers will now be the voice in Spanish that callers hear upon phoning in for information, and listening to all branch hours and addresses. For this community endeavor, Martínez hearkened back to her days doing the news in Spanish on Univision Television.

PreCollege Programs’ National Youth Sports Program recently received recognition at the national N.Y.S.P. conference for the 2004 Best First Year Program. In its first year of operation, PreCollege Programs’ N.Y.S.P. was specifically noted for its outstanding leadership, medical services, and daily activities schedule. There are over 200 N.Y.S.P. programs throughout the country. The local NYSP camp runs this summer.
