Applause Award

Mira Aceves,
GeoTeam Consultant

I lost my power supply for my laptop and had to reorder from Dell and they said it would be 10 days!!!
Mira kindly found a friend who loaned me one until I got mine. I would have been without my computer for that time period without her help. Now, THAT is customer service, which is the hallmark of what we do in Development and when it comes our way, it is SO appreciated.

A Four-Year Apprenticeship
Pays Off for Matt and Sal

Matt Bedford

Two building service engineer apprentices from Facilities Services, Matt Bedford (right) and Sal Martinez (below), graduated from the certified apprenticeship program on Feb. 10. This joint effort on the part of State Employees Trade Council (Unit 6), CSU, and SSU supported the two apprentices through a four-year educational and on-the-job training program so that they could become certified.

Many people contributed to the success of these two individuals, including the staff and management of Facilities Services, President Ruben Arminana, Vice President Larry Furukawa-Schlereth, and Human Services.

Armiñana and Schlereth, as well as members of the Chancellor’s Office, the Joint Apprenticeship Committee, and the CSU'S SETC attended the ceremony. It was followed by a lunch for all campus SETC members.

The apprenticeship training consisted of an arduous classroom and on-the-job training curriculum. Twice a week they drove more than 50 miles each way to their training sessions in San Francisco. Bedford joined SSU in 1999 and Martinez joined in 1993. They both began the apprenticeship program in July 2000.

As part of the recognition, they received certificates from the California Department of Industrial Relations and the SETC, as well as a resolution from the Lieutenant Governor, Cruz M. Bustamante, declaring the completion of their training.

The apprenticeship program is a joint effort between the SETC and the CSU and is certified by the California Department of Apprenticeship Standards. The Joint Apprenticeship Program has been a successful endeavor at SSU, says Harvey DeLorm of Facilities Services, and is an example of the union and the University working together to provide career training and opportunities for employees.

Opportunities Available for Teaching in China

Opportunities for members of the SSU community to teach in Shanghai, China at the Shanghai Sanda Institute will be explained in two informational meetings on campus in March. The meetings are set at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2 in Nichols 302 and at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 17 in Stevenson 1029.

One program is a paid internship for graduates of SSU to teach oral English skills to Sanda students. The other program is for University faculty to teach short summer courses to Sanda students. The internship program requires a commitment of one academic year (36 weeks). The faculty course is one three-unit course of 36 hours.

The informational meetings outline the paid internships and explain the requirements, the compensation and the responsibilities. In general, interns receive training in teaching English (course to be offered for a small fee at SSU in June), transportation allowance to Shanghai, room and board, stipend for living expenses, and Chinese language and culture classes (for a fee).

It's Not Too Soon for Summer Travel Plans

Summer travel is in full swing at the Travel Center in the Student Union. There are dozens of specialty-interest tours or vacation package ideas at the Center, plus resources for independent travelers, says director Laurie Lubeck. Hawaii and Mexico continue to be the most popular tropical destinations for June and there is still space for those flexible on dates. June and July departures are filling fast. Fares are up a bit from last year with new security and fuel charges, but consolidator rates are available, she says.

For further information, e-mail Lubeck at experience.travel@sonoma.edu or call 4-3400 or 792-0961 daily. Drop-in hours are Monday-Thursday 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Student Union, or by appointment.
