A Weekly E-Newsletter for SSU Faculty and Staff

Applause Award
Jack Ritchie,
University Library
When I show visitors around the campus, I always make the University
Library one of my first stops. To impress these people, I like to have
them see the Automated Retrieval System in action—but I can't do that
without an experienced Library staffer. I've made it my habit to look for Jack Ritchie to give the ARS tour. He always finds a way to make himself available, even if I walk in with the visitors and ask him on the spot. Jack's tours are entertaining and informative and our
visitors never fail to leave impressed. So, thanks Jack, for understanding how important it is to give our guests this important
look at the outstanding University Library and ARS.

School of Education Makes the Grade With National, State Accreditation Last week saw the culmination of several years of gathering data to highlight the School of Education's programs when they presented their case for accreditation to the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
The excellence of the programs resulted in recommendation to the Boards of both NCATE and CCTC for full accreditation. This was the School of Education's first attempt to gain national accreditation through NCATE; it has been reviewed and received state accreditation at seven-year intervals for many years.

Watch Math Profs Get Pi-ed Today
Six math professors (like Bill Barnier above) have signed up to get pi-ed between noon and 1 p.m. on Monday, May 14 in the annual Math Club fundraiser. It costs $1 to toss a pie and $5 to walk up and smash a pie in the face. This will be the Math Club's third annual Pi Day and regulars to the event say "it is always great sticky fun." The students are usually the ones who pie the professors. But sometimes professors from other departments and an occasional dean will join in the fun.
Volunteers Needed at César Chavez Programs on Saturday
Sonoma SERVES, SSU's AmeriCorps program, is looking for faculty and staff volunteers to help at the Sixth Annual César Chavez Health Fair this Saturday. “Celebrating Healthy Lifestyles, Fitness, and Healthy Eating” will be held from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Roseland Elementary School, 950 Sebastopol Road in Santa Rosa.
The fair offers families free vision, hearing, and dental screenings along with health information. This year, a farmers market will be added to encourage families to eat fruits and vegetables. SSU's AmeriCorps members and volunteers are partnering with the Santa Rosa City’s Creek Stewardship Project to revitalize the Santa Rosa Creek from Stony Point Road to Downtown Santa Rosa. Contact Sara Fuller at 4-3148 if you are interested in helping on various community service projects.
Remember Fred Curchack?
Former SSU drama professor Fred Curchack left SSU in 1986 and went on to national and international acclaim. He's coming back late March for a two performances at Sonoma Valley High School.
Curchack and North Bay actress and painter Laura Jorgensen will perform his newest work, "Golden Buddha Beach" on Friday March 25 and Saturday March 26 at 8 p.m. at Sonoma Valley's John Glaese "Little" Theatre, on the campus of Sonoma Valley High School, 20000 Broadway in Sonoma
Valley. "Golden Buddha Beach" is a fast- paced multimedia interpretation of their recent idyllic
Thai vacation retreat, marred by their concerns about their homeland and then destroyed by the tsunami.
Curchack taught at Sonoma State University before joining the
performing arts faculty at the University of Texas, Dallas in 1986. Tickets are $15 adults, $10 students/senior, at Readers' Books, 130 E. Napa, Sonoma, and the door. For further information, phone (707) 592-4631. |
