Nan Alamilla Boyd, Women's and Gender Studies, commented on a panel entitled "Queer Public Space in Post World War II San Francisco" at the Organization of American Historians meetings held in San Jose, March 31-April 3. On April 15-17 she will be attending the CSU Queer Studies conference at Fresno State, where she is presenting a paper on Roderick Ferguson's "Aberations in Black." She will also be giving at talk on "Male Impersonation and Drag Kings" at CSU Long Beach on April 25.

Matt James, Geology, gave an invited lecture at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco as part of the 100th anniversary of the 1905-1906 Galapagos expedition the Academy sent down to the equatorial archipelago for scientific specimens. This expedition rose to prominence when the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire completely destroyed the Academy's museum on Market Street. The title of his talk was "Collecting Evolution - The 1905-06 Galapagos Expedition of the California Academy of Sciences."

Jorge Porras, Modern Languages and Literature, read a paper at the 20th Conference on Spanish in the United States, held at the University of Illinois at Chicago, March 24-26. The title of the paper was "Acquiring the Standard While Maintaining the Vernacular: Sociolinguistic and Pedagogical Perspectives in U.S. Spanish." It is currently being considered for publication.
