Constitution DayThe Supreme Court and The Constitution Hearings begin this month for the first nominations to Supreme Court in 11 years. How will this affect you? The popular Fridays at Four is back for another semester for all campus faculty, staff, and students to network and mingle at the University Club. Everyone who comes is encouraged to sample from the free menu that Executive Chef Mark Dierkhising has created. A cash bar will be available. The event is held one Friday per month from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 16, Oct. 28, Nov. 11, and Dec. 16.
This year, the open enrollment period is Sept. 15 through Monday, Oct. 24. Enrollment and changes become effective January 1, 2006. Use this period to enroll and/or cancel enrollment in health, dental or flex cash, change plans and add eligible family members to your health and dental plans. Open enrollment materials may be ordered by using the pre-paid postcard sent to your home in July from CalPERS or online at www.calpers.ca.gov or by contacting the CalPERS customer contact center at (888) 225-7377.
2006 Benefit Changes
• Blue Shield and Kaiser have no benefit changes in 2006.
• PERS Choice and PERSCare basic health plans will add a smoking cessation program.
Openings are available to lease until June 30, 2006 one of four townhouses the University owns for use by faculty and staff. The intent of these properties is to offer safe, clean and convenient housing at a fair price to new employees. The three bedroom/ two-and-a-half bath homes are located a short walk from campus on Meridian Circle (across from Wolf Den Plaza on Bodway). They lease for $1,450 per month. Sonoma State University offers its annual War and Peace Lecture Series every Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Warren Auditorium on the SSU campus through Dec. 6. Among the highlights of the series is a panel discussion on Oct. 4 entitled “The Armament Industry” with SSU's Dr. Peter Phillips, director of Project Censored and professor of sociology and SSU economics professor Robert Eyler.
Judith Volkart of the American Civil Liberties Union and a part-time professor at SSU, discusses the Patriot Act on Sept. 13. On Nov. 1, UC Berkeley's Michael Nagler presents his lecture, “Planning a Non-Violent Future.” There is no charge for admission to the lecture series. The Student Health Center is asking those who work with students to encourage them to take advantage of a low-cost offer to get a Hepatitis B shot. Until Oct. 13, the Center can provide adolescent strength Hepatitis B vaccine for only $5 per injection to SSU students. This particular strength of vaccine is appropriate for individuals who are age 19 or under. The Sonoma County Health Department has made this special supply available because of a temporary overstock at their facility. Drop-in immunizations are given between 8 and 10:30 a.m. most mornings.
