Who is Elena Poniatowska? Elizabeth Martinez Explores
This Leading Mexican Writer in OLLI Evening Series

SSU professor Elizabeth Martinez focuses on the early fictional contributions of Elena Poniatowska, recognized today as one of Mexico's greatest writers, and a leading voice on Mexican culture for five decades, in an Oct. 5 lecture for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. OLLI is offering a unique and informative on Wednesday evening lecture series from 6:30-8:15 p.m. in the Cooperage at SSU.

Elena Poniatowksa lives in Mexico City and is the author of some fifty books. Poniatowska has excelled in several genres - as a journalist, novelist, short story writer, and essayist. She is admired today as a feminist, although in 1954 feminism didn't have broad appeal and only men were considered great writers, leaving the bright and talented Poniatowska on the intellectual periphery. Other SSU professors are featured in the series. Full Story.

A Policy for Those Who Want to Help
in Hurricane Relief Efforts

Those within the California State University have witnessed the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. The CSU recognizes that in light of the catastrophic nature of this event, some CSU employees may have the need to take time away from their CSU responsibilities. As a result, the CSU is implementing provisions to enable employees to provide assistance. Options may include payroll deduction to the state’s “Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Campaign,” volunteering for a relief organization, Family Medical Leave usage, or National Guard duty.
