Big Bike on Campus
Police Chief Nate Johnson stands next to the department's newest traffic tool - a brand new Harley Davidson motorcyle which will soon be put to work. The new motorcycle is part of a new traffic program that will begin in a few months. The program, will target speeding vehicles as well as other violations, will include safety information, radar signs, lighted crosswalks, speed bumps at selected locations, and enforcement. The visual aspects of the motorcycle will hopefully make it clear that the University is serious about traffic safety and encourages people to obey the 25 MPH speed limit on campus roadways.
Flu Vaccines Now Available at Health Center
This year's flu vaccine is now available at the SSU Student Health Center while supplies last. The cost for this immunization is $15 for current students and $25 for faculty and staff. Individuals wanting to be vaccinated should be prepared to wait or return another time if the health center staff are busy with regular patients. Please call ahead before dropping in for your vaccine, as the vaccine is administered during specific drop-in hours and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, please contact Georgia Schwartz, M.D., Director, Student Health Center, at 4-2921.
New Lighting to be Installed Around Campus
Five new lights to improve campus safety while minimizing annoying light pollution will soon be installed around campus. Members of the Campus Re-Engineering Committee performed their annual lighting inspection this past September and identified five locations in need of improved lighting. The locations that will be getting new lighting include: Art Building-facing Lot “A;” Schulz Center-facing east; Schulz Center-facing north; Salazar Hall-facing east; and Ives Hall-northwest corner. These new lights are currently in the process of installation and are expected to be fully functional by winter break. A sixth light was installed over the summer on the north side of Stevenson and was used as a model for this project. Together, these new lights should improve the safety of those on campus after dark and shine in areas that previously had limited or no illumination. The lights are designed in such a way as to direct light to designated areas while keeping excess light pollution low.
New Scooter Shed in Lot A Now Open
November 1 marked the opening of the new scooter shed located in parking lot A. The shed enables SSU's disabled employees to house their scooters safely and securely while on campus. This project involved the work of many individuals from Human Services, Facilities, Capital Planning, Design and Construction, Environmental Health and Safety, Police Services, and Risk Management. Those involved wish to thank everyone who contributed their time and effort to this important project.
