Saying Goodbye to Professor William Cord
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures was deeply saddened to
learn of the death this past July 16 of William O. Cord,
professor of Spanish from 1963 to 1989, and chair of the Division of Arts
and Humanities in an era when this role was elected by the faculty.
Faculty who knew him wish to bear witness to the diligent, principled,
insightful work Professor Cord did and the important achievements he
recorded during the Department's formative years. He was at the helm when
our major programs were built, and deserves much of the credit for their
robustness. His devotion to modern languages and cultures lives on in our
new generation of Modern Languages and Literature faculty, and his establishment of our Department's
rules and procedures that guide us to this day likewise assures that he
will not be forgotten.
