Linda Lipps Announces Retirement After 33 Years

Linda Lipps, Managing Director of Educational Support Services, has announced her intention to retire from the University after thirty-three years of service. Her last day of work will be Dec. 16.

In the course of her distinguished career at Sonoma State, Lipps has played key roles in many important campus and student support functions. She began at Sonoma State as a part-timer in the Media Center and has since served as coordinator of Field Experience/Community Service, Advisor, Associate Director of EOP, Director of the Career Center, Director of the Women's Resource Center, Director of the Instructional Resources Center and, most recently, Managing Director of Educational Support Services (including Disabled Student Services, Learning Skills Services, International Programs and the Tutorial Center). In addition Linda has taught in the Educational Mentoring Team program, Women's Studies, and the Management program. She wrote the Vista grant that provided the first funding for what is now JUMP and organized a two-day conference on Women and Power that was attended by more than 500 women. She also served in the Academic Senate during the very difficult era of layoff and reorganization.

In all her efforts at Sonoma State, Lipps has brought to bear a keen intelligence, an ability to analyze and improve systems, an orientation to continuous improvement, and a deep commitment to diversity. She is known as a talented and supportive manager who has provided constructive leadership and contributed to several major organizational transformations in the University. She has been a much appreciated mentor to staff and students alike.

In retirement, Lipps won't be that far away from the University. She lives in Petaluma in a 120 year-old Victorian that she and her husband have recently remodeled. She is looking forward to having time to work in the garden, do some writing, listen to her son play drums with the Earth, Wind and Fire Experience band, and get more involved in the community.

Postal Hike is on Its Way on Jan. 8

The long-threatened postal rate hike by the US Post Office becomes a reality on Jan. 8. Rates will increase by approximately 5.4 percent. The single-piece rate for first-class mail will increase from 37 cents to 39 cents, and the postcard rate will increase by one cent to 24 cents. Anyone offering mailing services should encourage clients to ramp up their direct mail programs now. Direct mail pieces should be printed by late December. The pieces should enter the postal stream the first week of January to both avoid the Christmas crush of mail and yet beat the proposed rate increase date of Jan. 8.
