The "Perfect Storm" and Your Safety
by Roseann Richard, Deputy Chief, Police Services
Somewhat of a "perfect storm" is created in regard to safety issues about this time each year. Darkness falls very early, even before many evening classes begin. Rain means that we are walking around campus with open umbrellas obscuring our view. It is holiday shopping time and everyone is in a rush. In light of reports of recent incidents, Police Services would like to remind everyone to remain focused on their surroundings.
Although you may have heard some of these tips before, please take a moment to review them again. Following them will make a difference to the safety of your person and property.
** Walk confidently and in groups. Do not stray from lighted pathways. Avoid isolated areas. Try not to carry too many items.
** Be aware of people and your surroundings. Avoid distractions such as cell phones (begin and conclude calls inside safe places such as lighted occupied buildings and/or your locked vehicle). If wearing a hood, be particularly aware.
** Do not leave packages or valuables in plain view in vehicles or offices. This is an invitation to criminals to pay special attention to you.
** Know where campus emergency “blue phones” are located along the paths you normally travel. Program Police Services phone number (4-2143) into your cell phone to report immediate suspicious or criminal activity on campus.
** Call Police Services for an escort to or from class or vehicles on campus (4-2143).
Anyone with additional information regarding past incidents or observing current suspicious activity is encouraged to contact Police Services immediately by dialing 911 from any campus phone or (707) 664-2143 from a cell phone.
Have a happy and very safe holiday season.
