Holiday Door and Cubicle Contest
Brings Out the Best...

Children's SchoolIt was a hotly-contested race this year - with a margin as slim as a slice of tinsel - as campus decorators pulled out their scissors, glue, tape and imaginations to bring some holiday cheer to us all.

Last year's winner, the School of Education, seemed a sure winner again this year until they were narrowly outdone by the new kid on the block - the Children's School.

Tucked into a corner of the campus, the entrance to the school was decorated for several winter holidays and included heartfelt and practical messages from the children about what the season means to them.

Second place winner, the School of Education, placed its staff in wintry arrangements that were highly imaginative (from skiers to Christmas carolers) and turned a drop-box into a smiling snowman (a big point getter for originality!)

School of EducationThird place winner was the always inventive Information Technology consultant Alisandra Brewer and her team. The CD tree has taken on new dimensions this year as the men on the staff showed some unexpected creativity with the silvery discs. The office doorways to several offices were wrapped like giant packages...and outside the department was an evergreen tree whose limbs were traditionally decorated with tinsel and garlands and ornaments and then "naturalized" by landscaper Jay Pederson who added organic materials to great effect.

The three winners had some strong contenders. The holiday wonderland in cubicles in Financial Services was a delight to wander through as each staff person added her or his own special touch to spread some holiday cheer.

Psychology delivered its regular message of warmth and peace with a playful arrangement that spilled into corners of the hallway

The Center for Performing Arts office was turned into a charming nook of holiday lights and the smell of freshly baked cookies (there for the judges!) that was hard to leave. The Associated Students business office took department integration to a new level by decorating with calculator tape. Campus Life showered itself in silvery paper with a file cabinet door dotted with festive red condom packages, a testament to how seriously they take their mission.

Sonoma State American Language Institute had a wonderful green wreath hand cut by international students learning about American tradition with special images from each country from which the students came. Finally, let us show some pity for the poor Pub entry. The window washer showed up early and washed away their artwork before we had a chance to see it.

All winners received a special prize from Seawolf Shops.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE JUDGES! - Jean Wasp, Linda Williams, Kim Wallis, Laurel Holmstrom, Beth Warner and Leslie Mouton
