Join the SSU Faculty Writing program

Working on an academic paper? Looking for feedback from your peers? The
SSU Faculty Writing Program consists of three separate on-going seminars that meet every other week to discuss members' scholarly writings in progress. The seminar experience is collegial and non-competitive. "Having a safe environment to present early work and to explore ideas is crucial, therefore the Writing Program is kept separate from retention, tenure, and promotion issues," says one of the organizers, professor Kathy Charmaz. Untenured and tenured members from the same department are placed in different seminars, unless a junior faculty member requests
otherwise and seminar members agree. New and tenure-track faculty are given first priority.

In a typical Writing Program seminar, presenters distribute their work one week in advance for their fellow seminar participants to review and to make written comments. During the seminar itself, each participant may begin by explaining his or her work and placing it into context. Members offer comments and participate in the general discussion. Examples of works that can be submitted for reviews include grant proposals, essays, conference papers, chapters, journal manuscripts, revise and resubmit manuscripts, rejected manuscripts, book proposals, keynote and plenary addresses.

The schedule for Writing Program seminars is:
Wednesday Seminar: 4-6 p.m. on 2/8, 2/22, 3/8, 3/22, 4/5, 5/3, 5/17
Thursday Seminar: 10 a.m -12 p.m. on 2/2, 2/16, 3/2, 3/16, 3/30, 4/13, 4/27, 5/11
