Update New IT Certificates

Sonoma State’s current security certificate authority that ensures the encrypted connection between the user and University Web and e-mail servers expires on Feb. 25, reports Robin Marshall, Director of Users and Workstation Services. Information Technology began replacing certificates on the servers on Saturday, Feb. 18.

In order to make use of the new certificate authority, faculty, staff and students now need to download the new version of the user certificate from IT’s Web site at http://www.sonoma.edu/it/faq/cert/. The certificates are easy to install by following the directions on the download page.

It is important to understand that everyone will still be able to access the Web servers and e-mail servers even if they have not downloaded the new certificate, yet. Users will receive a message asking them if they want to accept an unknown certificate. If they click okay, they can still access these services and the connection will still be encrypted. They will be asked this every time until the new certificate is downloaded and installed.

Undergraduate Research Grants Still Available

Funds are available to support several additional undergraduate research grants this semester. These grants, funded by Instructionally Related Activity Fees, are designed to aid undergraduates with expenses they may incur in their research projects, such as supplies, equipment or travel to present their research at professional or scholarly meetings. The maximum award is $500 per grant. To qualify, a research project must be supported by a faculty sponsor and must be directly related to a class in which the student is enrolled.

Faculty members are encouraged to make this information available to students who are engaged in or planning independent research projects. Guidelines and application forms are available in the Academic Programs office, Stevenson 1041. The priority deadline for applications is March 20. For further information contact David Hartranft at 4-2237.

When Thoughts Turn to Travel...Think Experiential

Laurie Lubeck, the travel consultant at Experience Travel in the Student Union, is busy booking flights, trains and active tours to Europe as well as family holidays to tropical destinations and Australia all the way into Fall. The interest this year, according to Lubeck, continues to be experiential travel that focuses on a lot of local interaction, such as culinary or walking tours. She advises that now is the time to secure flights for summer, and later on in spring, train passes and schedules. Services are free at the travel center and special rates are always available. Contact Lubeck at Experience Travel at 4-3400, Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; or at (707) 792-0961 during other hours.
