Carolyn Epple, Anthropology, organized a session at the Annual Meetings of the Society for Applied Anthropology in Vancouver, B.C. from March 28 to April 2, 2006. The session, chaired by John Wingard, was titled "Daily Needs of Persons Living with HIV/AIDS." The session included papers by Epple and SSU undergraduate majors in anthropology. The papers reported research carried out by the students participating in the SSU Community Scholars Program. The presenters and their papers were Carolyn Epple (presented by John Wingard): "Illness of Living with HIV/AIDS in Sonoma County," Bene Rather-Taylor: "Women and HIV/AIDS"; Chelsea Bahr: "Community Identified Needs of Latina/os Living with HIV/AIDS"; Donald Williams: "Daily Needs of People Living with HIV/AIDS and Mental Illness"; and Wesley Wills: "HIV/AIDS and Physical Disability".

Elizabeth C. Martinez, Chicano and Latino Studies/Modern Languages, published an extensive pedagogical article in the April issue of the Journal of Hispanic Higher
Education entitled "Teaching Latino Caribbean History through `In the Time of the Butterflies,' the Novel and the Showtime film," an in-depth strategy to promote critical thinking among undergraduate students, with two appendices and extensive notes.

John D. Wingard, Anthropology, organized and chaired a session at the Annual Meetings of the Society for Applied Anthropology in Vancouver, BC March 28 to April 2, 2006. The session was titled "Slices of Life in San Ignacio Belize." The session included papers by undergraduate majors in anthropology. The papers reported on research carried out by the students during the summer of 2005 as participants in an ethnographic field school in Belize directed by Wingard. The presenters and their papers were Jamie Chiavola: "Tourism in San Ignacio"; Dan Umber: "Giving a Good Tour-Characteristics of Tour Guides in San Ignacio"; Chelsea Bahr: "Cultural Changes-The Decline of Domestic Tortilla Production"; Wesley Wills: "Forest Gardening-Resource Usage and Potential for Sustainability in Santa Familia"; Belize and Charles Mikulik: "Music and Tradition: Changes in Village Culture."
