Credentials Ceremony for Many New Teachers
The School of Education is holding two credentials ceremonies next week. They are: Tuesday, May 23, 5 -6:30 p.m. in Evert B. Person Theater for the Educational Leadership and Special Education Department and Curriculum Studies and Secondary Education Department; Wednesday, May 24, 5-6:30 p.m. in Evert B. Person Theater for the Literacy Studies and Elementary Education Department.
La Raza Students Thank Their Mentors and Familia
Each year graduating Sonoma State University students with Native American, Latino or Chicano heritage gather for the annual La Raza graduation celebration. This year’s Raza Graduation will take place on Friday May 26 at 5 p.m. in the Everet B. Person Theatre. The keynote speaker will be Elisa Velasquez-Andrade, Ph.D. from the Psychology Department. The ceremony includes cultural music, keynote speakers, and a unique opportunity for the graduates to thank the individuals who have assisted them in obtaining their degree. More
African-American Graduates Celebrate
The 14th annual African-American Graduation Celebration takes place at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 26 in the SSU Cooperage. Graduating students will receive their bachelor’s or master’s degrees the next day, May 27. The African American Graduation Celebration is an opportunity for the University to acknowledge the achievements of African-American students and the students to thank their families, friends, faculty and mentors. SSU President Ruben Arminana will greet the graduates. A reception follows the program. Guest speaker will be Vice-Provost Carol Blackshire-Belay. Moderator is Andre Bailey, friend and mentor to many of the graduates, who speaks every year about the struggles and accomplishments of the students.
Academic School Receptions
Follow Commencement
Each Academic School hosts an informal reception for graduates and their guests immediately following the Commencement ceremonies. Refreshments are served. The receptions provide a good opportunity for graduates to greet faculty and introduce family and friends, and for informal photographs.
Following the 9 a.m. ceremony: School of Science & Technology (McCabe Plaza/Schulz Information Center, outdoors); School of Social Sciences (Stevenson Courtyard). The SSU chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society in Psychology, is hosting a Psychology Graduation Dinner for psychology graduates, their families, and psychology faculty. The event is always a festive one, and is held at the Doubletree Hotel on Friday evening, May 26.
