Come and Explore Suburbia!:
3 Operas on the Theme of Love

Quantum Opera Theatre presents "Suburbia! 3 One Act Operas" in seven performances from Feb. 21- March 4. Musical Director Lynne Morrow and Stage Director Adrian Elfenbaum have combined their creative talents to bring the one act operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gian Carlo Menotti and Leonard Bernstein to the Evert B. Person Theatre stage.

Mozart, Menotti and Bernstein are three composers who take a look at love relationships: love rebuffed, love unrequited, love in need of repair. Behrokh KhoshnevisInventor of Automated Construction
Explains His Process, Feb. 15

Behrokh Khoshnevis, a professor at the University of Southern California, presents his promising new approach to automated construction of whole structures at a lecture from 4:30-5:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15 in Salazar 2009A. The event is part of the the Engineering Science lecture series.

Khoshnevis has developed Contour Crafting, a mega-scale fabrication process with which a single house or a colony of houses may be constructed automatically in a single run with all plumbing and electrical utilities imbedded in each house. The implication is especially profound for emergency shelter construction and low-income housing. NASA is exploring possible application of CC in building on other planets. This new mode of construction will be one of the very few feasible approaches for building on planets such as Moon and Mars, which are being targeted for human colonization before the end of the century.

For more information, contact Jagan Agrawal, Director of the Engineering Degree Program, at 4-4438.

"Grandmother's Blessings" Explored

Susan Stewart of the Psychology Department leads the School of Social Sciences Brown Bag Seminar entitled "Grandmothers' Blessings" at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 13, in Stevenson 2011. During a sabbatical last fall, Stewart gathered the written memories of more than 120 men, women and children of their grandmothers from many parts of the world. While each memoir, poem or letter describes a uniquely wonderful older woman, several consistent themes emerged as people wrote about how their grandmother - or another older woman - blessed them in a significant and enduring way. These themes - with excerpts from many of the contributors - will be presented, and there will be time for reflection and sharing. Faculty, staff, students, and others are invited to the informal Brown Bag Seminars held on during the noon hour on selected Tuesdays throughout the term, all in Stevenson 2011. Faculty wishing to present during the Spring Series may still contact Dean Elaine Leeder.
