GETTING CLOSE COUNTS

Shahram Marivani, network analyst and laser safety officer in the School of Science and Technology, used his photographic talents to capture this picture of an egret by the pond north of the campus. "I was able to gradually get very close to it without scaring it," he said. "I think I was probably only eight feet away from it. That was really amazing because they have the tendency to fly away a whole lot sooner. I surely appreciated it.

Global Sonoma Web Site Looking for International Photos

Organizers of the SSU Global and International Education Initiative are in the process of creating a Web site to highlight those programs, research and classes at SSU that have a global or international focus. Organizer Suzanne Toczyski says it will be a kind of "virtual international center" for people surfing the web to learn more about the University or looking for international connections while they are here.

In order to make this site visually exciting, Toczyski is seeking digital photographs taken during study abroad or travel in another country. To participate, send no more than three digital photos (only JPG or GIF format images no more than 100 kb in size) to suzanne.toczyski@sonoma.edu.

Include the following information for each photo: the name of the photographer, the approximate date the photo was taken (month and year if possible), the circumstances (study abroad in X, travel to Y), and a short identification of what the image contains.

North Bay High School-College
Alliance Sets First Meeting on Campus

SSU staff and faculty are invited to the inaugural meeting of the North Bay High School-College Alliance, sponsored by the SSU Early Assessment Program. The meeting is from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20 in the Cooperage. Guest speaker Douglas Fisher will discuss the secrets behind motivating adolescents to make and reach goals. The Alliance, made up of educators from regional high schools, community colleges, educational nonprofit groups and SSU, will then brainstorm on goals and activities of the alliance.

The NBHCSA was formed in response to an identified need for ongoing and open dialogue between high school and higher education institutions in the North Bay.  One of the goals of the NBHSCA is to create a venue for institutional stakeholders in the high school, community college and four year college settings to engage in sustained discussion and problem-solving with respect to students’ present and future educational needs and our success at meeting them. To attend, contact Katheryn Horton, EAP Coordinator, at katheryn.horton@sonoma.edu.
