Roth Features "Covering War's Victims"
in Analysis of Iraq Photographs

School of Social Sciences Brown Bags advance interdisciplinary interaction in the social sciences by sharing work among colleagues, staff and students in informal, lunch time seminars.

This Tuesday, Feb. 27, Andy Roth, of the Sociology Department, discusses "Covering War's Victims: A Content Analysis of Photographs" in Stevenson 2011. This study examines the content and placement of war photographs in print news coverage of the Iraq War. It tracks coverage in The New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle from the onset of the war, in March 2003, to the present, in order to determine how frequently news photographs depicting the war in Iraq appear on the front page of each day's coverage. In particular, the study examines patterns in photographs that depict humans injured or killed in the war and statistical reports of the war's victims. The goal of this research is to evaluate whether or not corporate newspapers, such as The Times and The Chronicle, provide their readers with a complete "picture" of the war in Iraq. The study compares its findings on Iraq with prior work in the social sciences and mass communication on print news coverage of the US war in Afghanistan, Vietnam, and World War II.

Faculty Urged to Support Students in
California Pre-Doctoral Program

Faculty members are encouraged to notify eligible students of the California Pre-Doctoral Program for the 2007-2008 academic year. The program is designed to increase the diversity of the pool of potential university faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of current upper division or graduate students in the CSU who are economically or educationally disadvantaged. Special emphasis will be placed on increasing the number of CSU students who enter graduate programs at one of the UC institutions.

Selected scholars work closely with a CSU faculty sponsor to develop a plan that leads ultimately to enrollment in a doctoral program. Pre-Doctoral awards, in the amount of $3,000, may be used for travel to doctorate-granting institutions and national symposia or professional meetings, for application and test fees, journal subscriptions, and membership in professional organizations. Up to $1,000 of the award may be used by the faculty sponsor for joint travel.

Selections are made at the Chancellor’s Office and are based upon information given in the application. Application packets are available in the Academic Affairs office, Stevenson 1041. Completed applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 26. For further information contact David Hartranft at 4-2237 or Elaine  Sundberg at 4-2215.
