California Assembly Approves State Budget

The State Assembly adopted a $140 billion state budget during an all-night session last night following a deal brokered by Assembly leaders earlier in the day.

A possible last-minute cut of one percent (more than $28 million) from the CSU’s budget did not occur. Word of the cut sparked concern from the CSU and the California Faculty Association yesterday.

The CFA organized a press conference in Sacramento yesterday to voice its opposition to the budget reduction, which would have required the reopening of almost all labor contracts that were only completed in the last few months after lengthy negotiations. In support, CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed participated in the press conference over the telephone.

"It’s time for the state to decide if it wants world-class universities, or world-class prisons," said Reed. “Reduced funding from the state would hinder the CSU’s ability to meet the workforce needs of the California economy.”

A letter was also sent to the Legislature yesterday asking to continue the CSU budget approved by the legislative conference committee. The budget now is scheduled for a vote in the State Senate.
