Two Mad
Fortnights 2007!

"For years we have been telling our students that “There’s always something to do at SSU!” and are we living up to that tagline this fall as we introduce our 2007 Two Mad Fortnight welcome programs and events to the SSU campus community," says Mo Phillips, assistant director of Residential Life.

These events are open to all students, staff and faculty, so check out the events listed in this publication as well as the events on the student activities calendar to get an idea of what is going on and how to get involved.

TMFN is a series of programs, lectures, fairs, trips and events that are sponsored by a variety of departments and student services on campus and are designed to open the student’s eyes to the plethora of options available to them. There are almost two months of continuous welcome programs designed to entertain, educate and show off the community.

A NEW TRADITION

Dean of the School of Social Sciences Elaine Leeder leads last year's processional at the New Student Convocation with President Ruben Armiñana behind her. The event has been expanded this year to allow the campus community to welcome new students to SSU.

The Campus Community is Invited to "First Day" on Aug. 20 to Welcome New Students

A new tradition at SSU begins on Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. "First Day" was created to welcome all new students (freshman and transfer students) to the academic life at Sonoma State University. It is an opportunity for the students to receive an official welcome from University faculty, staff and students. The entire campus community is encouraged to attend.

During that time the students will engage in many activities to get to know others in their class and will also complete the CIRP Freshman Survey if they are not a transfer student. From there they will walk over to the Lakes for opening convocation and lunch.

"We want to create a traditional welcome for our students that will mirror the graduation in Spring, thus creating bookends of their experience at SSU," says Dr. Elaine Leeder, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, and coordinator of the new student convocation.

Faculty who would like to be a part of Convocation should meet at the Stevenson loading dock at 11:30 a.m. in Regalia. Questions should be refer to elaine.leeder@sonoma.edu. MORE
