"First Day", Aug. 25

"First Day" was created to welcome all new students (freshman and transfer students) to academic life at SSU and it happens this year from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 25. It is an opportunity for the students to receive an official welcome from University faculty, staff and students. The entire campus community is encouraged to attend. Faculty who would like to be a part of this special Convocation should meet at the Stevenson loading dock at 11:30 am in Regalia. Questions should be referred to Elaine Leeder, at elaine.leeder@sonoma.edu

Two Mad Fortnights

Aug. 23 -Sept. 30

Two Mad Fortnights, beginning on Saturday, Aug. 23, is the SSU way of welcoming new students and welcoming back continuing students to the Fall 2008 semester. But, faculty and staff are always invited to join in the fun.

The events begin at 11 a.m. on Aug. 23 with the parents’ reception, family BBQ, informational meetings, and an evening of entertainment. Beginning at 8 p.m. on Aug. 24 is the famous “Big Night,” with games, bands, information on clubs and more.
Welcome Month contains many other exciting events.

Excel Awards

EXCELLING ON THEIR OWN - The EXCEL for Youth Program, now in its 26th year at SSU, was recently recognized with a State Assembly Resolution for its many positive contributions to education by Assemblymember Jared Huffman (second from left) at a reception at the campus Art Gallery. Princeton Review's New "Green" Rating Names SSU One of Top US Campuses for Sustainability

Princeton ReviewSSU earned a major "green" rating in a new category developed this year by the Princeton Review in its annual 2009 Best 368 Colleges issue this year. A burgeoning interest among students in attending schools that practice, teach and support environmentally-responsible choices is being noticed by educators across the country.

SSU earned a score of 98 out of 99 and was topped only by 11 other U.S. campuses that included Harvard University, Arizona State University and the University of Oregon.

SSU outperformed ten other California colleges who scored in the 90s - UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, Santa Clara University, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Stanislaus, Claremont McKenna and Stanford University. MORE

Son Fest Sets the Stage for Rec Center Celebration, August 25

The Recreation Center invites all faculty and staff to attend the inaugural Son Fest, Monday, Aug. 25, from 3-7 p.m. Son Fest brings together health and fitness games and activities with local and on-campus vendors to provide one of the greatest health and fitness festivals the campus has ever seen.
