Performing Arts:

“We Won’t Pay! We Won’t Pay!”


“We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay!” under the direction of Doyle Ott, will open at the Evert B. Person Theatre on Fri., Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. The production will close on Sat., Oct. 18 after eight performances. Written by Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo in 1974, the play tackles corporate greed and political corruption, while remaining "wickedly funny".

Tickets are $12 for SSU faculty, alumni and staff, and can be purchased online or by contacting the Center For Performing Arts Box Office at 4-2353. Art Exhibits:

Art Faculty Exhibition

The biennial Art Faculty Exhibition is now open, and will be on view through Sun., Oct. 19. The exhibition features the work of John Ferdico (sculpture), Stephen Galloway (photography), Nathan Haenlein (printmaking), Rob Keller (sculpture), Kurt Kemp (drawing and printmaking), Jann Nunn (sculpture), Mark Perlman (painting), Gregory Roberts (ceramic sculpture) and Carole Splendore (painting). The exhibition is housed in the University Art Gallery, which is open Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekends from noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed Mondays and holidays. “I Express…” Art Exhibition on Display

The “I Express…” art exhibition explores themes that SSU students identified as important in the current election cycle, such as war and the environment. Participating artists were selected by the spring 2008 Gallery and Museum Methods class and include Katy Anderson, Allegra Burke, Nuala Creed, Rob Keller, Thomas Pratt, Mario Uribe and Nancy Worthington.

The exhibit will appear in the University Library Arty Gallery until Nov. 5. The Gallery is open Mon. through Fri. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekends from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, contact Karen Brodsky at 4-4240 or visit the website.

“The Simplest Chemistry There Is: Doing Reactions One Molecule at a Time”

In this installment of the What Physicists Do Lecture Series, Dr. Miquel Salmeron of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will describe the use of simple, yet powerful microscopes to push and pull molecules and to stretch and bend their chemical bonds. This presentation will take place on Mon., Oct. 6 in Darwin 103. “Weapons of Mass Destruction”

“Visible Numbers”

This lecture, by Raphael Patton of Saint Mary’s College, is brought to you by the M*A*T*H Colloquium. “Social Web: How Social and Collaborative Computing is Changing the Enterprise”

Julia Grace, of IBM Almaden, lectures as part of the Computer Science Colloquium on Thurs., Oct. 9 at noon in Salazar 2016. Grace will discuss several of the Web2.0 applications used at IBM to promote and foster business relationships and increase productivity. “You First: The Art and Science of Eating”

Najine Shariat, a clinical dietitian and nutritionist, shares her unparalleled approach to nutrition and the "art of living" in this installment of the Women’s Health Lecture Series. Shariat’s approach links nutrition to how we live, to helping prevent and treat major diseases, and making eating a pleasure. Shariat is the founder of the IT'S YOU! Nutrition clinic, which is located in Santa Rosa and has recently opened a second establishment in San Diego. “Architecture and Identity Under King Hassan II of Morocco”

Assistant Professor of Art History Jennifer Roberson examines the architecture of King Hassan II (1961-1999), as part of the Arts and Humanities Research and Creative Works Forum. Roberson will discuss examine Hassan’s architecture and his notion of constructing a national identity. Her presentation will begin at 12:05 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 9, in Schulz 3001. “The Future of the Built Environment in Sonoma County”

The Six Elements of Sustainability Lecture Series presents an interactive forum with the 2008 Board of Supervisors candidates. The panel will consist of Rue Furch (5th District), Will Pier (1st District), Sharon Wright (3rd District) and Shirlee Zane (3rd District). “Examining the Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act”

Freelance Journalist Lindsay Beyerstein discusses her article as it appeared in the publication, In These Times, as part of the Modern Media Censorship Lecture Series. "The Leopard"

The Sonoma Film Institute (SFI) presents this 1963 film, based on the Lampedusa novel, which chronicles the downfall of a powerful family as the world gives way to a new order. Featuring Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale. Admission is $5, $4.50 for non-SSU students and senior citizens, and $3.50 for SFI members and children under 12.  “Speed Racer”

Associated Student Productions (ASP) presents this 2008 film, featuring Emile Hirsch, John Goodman and Susan Sarandon. Born to race cars, Speed (Hirsch) is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless in his incredible Mach 5 built by his father (Goodman). When he runs into a plot by the devious Royalton Company to fix the top races he must find a way to beat them at their own game. “Speed Racer” will be shown on Sat., Oct. 4 at 9 p.m. in the Cooperage. Parent and Family Weekend Just Around the Corner

SSU will be host to the annual Parents and Family Weekend from Fri., Oct. 10 to Sun., Oct. 12, welcoming families of our students who are visiting the campus and sharing in some of the great features of our university.

Parent and Family Weekend will allow parents to visit with their children and engage in some of the activities available to students throughout the year. The weekend includes athletic events, lectures from professors in the Schools of Business and Economics and Social Sciences, a hypnotist, information about services at SSU and several ways to see the School of Arts & Humanities in action.
