IN MEMORIAM
Kenneth M. Stocking
Kenneth Stocking, professor emeritus of environmental studies, passed away on Nov. 17. He was 97.
A graduate of the College of Pacific and the University of Southern California, his career at Sonoma State began in 1964. During his 15 years with the university, Stocking was professor and chair of the Biology Department, founded the Department of Environmental Studies and Planning, and started the botanical garden near the lakes which still bears his name.
While working at SSU, Stocking was appointed by then-Governor Ronald Reagan as the Central Coast representative for the California Coastal Commission. He was the president of Sonoma County Tomorrow, chairman of the Sonoma County Conservation Council, board member of the Sonoma Land Trust, and an active member of the Sierra Club, California Native Plant Society, Audubon Society and many other organizations.
After his retirement from SSU in 1979, Stocking traveled to England, Europe, Africa and Asia with his wife of 69 years, Mary, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be private, but donations can be made to the Kenneth M. Stocking Scholarship Fund, c/o Development Office, 2054 Stevenson Hall, SSU, Rohnert Park, CA 94928 or to the California Native Plant Society, 2707 K St., Suite 1, Sacramento, CA 95816.
A campus celebration of Ken Stocking's life will be held at Sonoma State in the Spring. Information will be provided in NewsBytes as it becomes available.
