Question of the Week

Question of the Week"Why doesn't SSU have a football team?"

"In the early to mid-1990s, many California NCAA Division II schools dropped their football teams. This forced SSU football to play larger, better-funded programs and the team was also traveling out of state to find opponents at the same level of competition.

With expenses escalating and the stricter enforcement of Title IX in California with the CSU Cal/NOW Consent Decree, SSU dropped football after the 1996 season. There is only one NCAA Division II football program remaining in California, at Humboldt State.

Even if there was an adequate number of teams to compete against, SSU would have to bring in 150 new female student-athletes in order to field a new football program of 100 males, to maintain compliance with gender equity."

Question by Linda Torres. Response by Bill Fusco, director of athletics.
